Reds trio in Under-21 squad

Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Ben Amos have been called up to the England Under-21 squad for the games with Azerbaijan and Israel.

Defender Jones has already been a mainstay of Stuart Pearce's side but he'll have a new partner at the heart of the defence now Chris Smalling is ineligible.

After an outstanding display against Spurs on Monday, the former Blackburn stopper must be a candidate to captain his country at Vicarage Road and Oakwell.

Twenty-year-old Welbeck has been involved with Fabio Capello's last two senior squads but is initially with the younger age group, despite his man-of-the-match display against Tottenham.

Young goalkeeper Amos has been drafted into the Under-21 squad before and will compete with Jack Butland and Declan Rudd for the number one slot.

The Azerbaijan fixture is a European Championship qualifier while the Israelis, who will host the 2013 tournament, provide friendly opposition at Barnsley's ground.
